An exceptionally finely hand-carved shell cameo from the Victorian era. Featuring an expertly rendered depiction of a Bacchante, a priestess and follower of Dionysus, the god of wine, festivities, and theatre. The cameo is set within a smooth, custom-made 14ct yellow gold frame. Its versatile design allows it to be worn as either a brooch or a pendant. It features a unique barrel pin fastener for secure wear. Stamped with a makers mark K & Co for Kilpatrick and Co. of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia and London, UK. The back is signed with carved initials and the number 23.
